You're tired, but you can't sleep. Your joints ache. Your moods swing in ways that don't feel like you.

You ask about hormones and hear "your labs are normal," or you wait three months for an appointment. Here's what I want every woman to know: bioidentical hormone cream is easier to get than most people think, and when your body needs hormones, availability is key.

What Mercier Therapy taught me about hormones

In 2021 I trained with Dr. Jennifer Mercier, an amazing, intuitive practitioner and the creator of Mercier Therapy. Jennifer is a midwife, naturopathic doctor, and licensed massage therapist who has worked in women's health since 1999. Her training spans traditional midwifery, OB/GYN, reproductive endocrinology, and primary care. She believes in speaking both languages, conventional and functional medicine, and you feel that in how she teaches.

Her work is also deeply personal. Jennifer lived with severe endometriosis and Hashimoto's, and she knows pregnancy loss firsthand. After her own students used Mercier Therapy on her, she gave birth to her first child in 2011. She created Mercier Therapy to help women with fertility challenges, pelvic pain, endometriosis, PCOS, and hormone imbalance. Today it's practiced in 34 states and 22 countries, and she has shared her work through research in Midwifery Today, her book Conceive, and two documentaries.

Her gift is seeing the pelvis as part of the whole woman, not a separate set of parts.

Mercier work opens up pathways, both physical and hormonal. Deep, gentle visceral work helps release tight tissue and restore blood flow to the uterus and ovaries. That matters because your body runs on communication. Your brain's hypothalamus and pituitary gland send hormone signals to your ovaries, and your ovaries signal back. This conversation is called the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian (HPO) axis. When the pathways are open, those messages have a clearer road to travel.

Mercier Therapy: opening the physical and hormonal pathways.

But a clear road still needs messengers. Bodywork can open the pathways, and sometimes the body still needs the hormones themselves to send the message. If you're on a fertility journey, my post on natural fertility support with Mercier Therapy goes deeper.

Takeaway: Open the pathways, then make sure the messengers are there.

Why availability is key

The best hormone plan in the world doesn't help if you can't get your hands on it. And in the U.S., getting hormones is harder than it should be.

Prescriptions are hard to come by. Many women wait months for an appointment, only to hear "your labs are normal" or "this is just aging." Others are told they're too young, too old, or not "bad enough" yet. Meanwhile, they still can't sleep.

Even with a prescription, the shelf may be empty. After the FDA removed the black box warning from hormone therapy in late 2025, demand for estrogen patches surged. By 2026, women were calling pharmacy after pharmacy to fill their prescriptions. In September 2026, the FDA acknowledged that patients were having difficulty getting their usual estradiol patches and said it was working with manufacturers to increase supply.

Other countries make it easier. In 2022, the UK made a low-dose vaginal estradiol tablet (Gina) the first hormone therapy women could buy at a pharmacy without a prescription. Estriol, a gentler form of estrogen, has been prescribed in Europe for decades, but it is not part of any FDA-approved drug in the U.S. Women here simply have fewer doors to walk through.

That's where bioidentical creams come in. Progesterone cream is one of the few bioidentical hormones you can order online in the U.S. without a prescription. Platt Wellness also offers estrogen creams (estriol, and an estradiol + estriol blend) you can order directly. No waiting room, no pharmacy hunt.

Creams also absorb through the skin instead of going through your digestive system first. Dr. Platt suggests thinner-skinned areas, like the inner arms, neck, or chest, and rotating spots.

Takeaway: When prescriptions are hard to get or out of stock, quality hormone creams can keep you from going without. You still need to choose a quality product and use it wisely.

The link most women never hear about: hormones and frozen shoulder

Here's one that surprises my clients. Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis) most often affects adults ages 40 to 60, and it affects women more often than men, according to the Cleveland Clinic. That's the same window as perimenopause and menopause.

In 2022, Duke Health researchers presented a study at the North American Menopause Society meeting. They found that postmenopausal women using hormone therapy had a lower risk of frozen shoulder than women who did not. Estrogen plays a role in calming inflammation and keeping connective tissue healthy. This shows an association, not proof of cause, but it's worth knowing.

As a fascia-focused bodyworker, this one matters to me. A stiff, painful shoulder in your 40s or 50s may be about more than the shoulder.

Takeaway: If your shoulder is "freezing" in midlife, ask about your hormones too, not just your rotator cuff.

Why I trust Dr. Platt

Dr. Michael E. Platt practiced internal medicine from 1972 to 2009 and has spent nearly 40 years focused on bioidentical progesterone. He wrote The Miracle of Bioidentical Hormones and Adrenaline Dominance. His approach looks at how progesterone, insulin, and adrenaline work together, not just at one lab value.

His idea of "adrenaline dominance" connects to things I see every day: poor sleep, anxiety, restless legs, and teeth grinding. (I wrote about that last one in teeth grinding and your nervous system.)

I've personally used both progesterone and estrogen creams. Here's what I recommend from Platt Wellness:

For how to apply them, start with Dr. Platt's progesterone guidelines.

Takeaway: Choose a product made by a physician with decades of hormone experience, with clear guidance on how to use it.

Use hormone creams wisely

Easy access is a gift. It also means you're in the driver's seat, so a few guardrails:

Takeaway: Over-the-counter doesn't mean one-size-fits-all.
